On Palestinian prisoners day, 17 April 2011, Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association launched its new campaign, Prisoners at Risk, which will raise awareness of specific cases of Palestinian political prisoners whose detention by Israel presents serious dangers. The campaign will begin with a demand to free Ayed Dudeen, who has been held by Israel without charge or trial since October 2007, making him the currently longest held administrative detainee.

Ramallah, 17 October 2011

On 11 October 2011, the Israeli government and Hamas authorities concluded a deal whereby 1,027 Palestinian prisoners will be released in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, a long-awaited development for Palestinian prisoners, their families and Palestinian society. As organizations dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), however, it is the obligation of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association and Al-Haq to highlight their concerns and condemn those aspects of the deal that are fundamentally at odds with international law.

Ramallah, 13 October 2011

As the world welcomed the conclusion of an extensive prisoner exchange deal between Israeli and Hamas authorities on 11 October, Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli prisons resolutely entered their third week of a hunger strike, launched on 27 September in response to pronounced deteriorations in their detention conditions. Addameer is concerned that these prisoners’ dire health conditions and isolation will only be exacerbated over the next three days as Israeli prisons close during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Read the rest of this entry »

Ramallah 11 October

The campaign of civil disobedience launched by Palestinian prisoners on 27 September is now entering its third week.  Hundreds of prisoners have joined the campaign by going on either open-ended or 3 day hunger strike. On 10 and 11 October, the entire prisoner population in the prisons of Gilboa (336) Nafha (511), Rimon (716), Eshel (262) and Ashkelon (142) have reportedly declared an open ended hunger strike, with more expected to do the same in the coming days. Four women are also on hunger strike at Damon prison and, like other hunger-strikers, have been denied salt and had electronic items confiscated from their cells. Read the rest of this entry »

Update on the Collective Punishment of Palestinian Political Prisoners Held in Israeli Prisons

We are writing, as Palestinian human rights organizations dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), to follow up on our letter of 5 October 2011 regarding the collective punishment of Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli prisons. In light of measures taken in recent days by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) against Palestinian prisoners taking part in a large-scale campaign of disobedience, we would like to reiterate our concerns about their situation and call on you to take immediate action to condemn these measures. Read the rest of this entry »

Ramallah, 11 October 2011

Addameer expresses its utmost dismay at the imposition of a six-month ban on entry into the West Bank (as defined by Israel ) on the Chairman of its Board of Directors, Abdullatif Ghaith. Mr. Ghaith, a 70-year-old East Jerusalem resident, is one of the founders of Addameer and has been serving on the Board for the past twenty years, in addition to his other activities in the field of human rights in East Jerusalem and the West Bank .

Ramallah, 10 October 2011

Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association calls for immediate action on behalf of Ahmad Sa’adat, the imprisoned Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), whose health has quickly deteriorated after 14 days of hunger strike. On 27 September 2011, when Mr. Sa’adat, along with other PFLP prisoners, entered an open-ended hunger strike to protest their worsening detention conditions, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) responded by confiscating fluids like milk and juice, as well as salt, leaving prisoners with water as their only nourishment. Read the rest of this entry »

Ramallah 6 October 2011

The hunger strike and acts of civil disobedience originally announced on 27 September amongst Palestinian political prisoners affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine continues to gain momentum, with increasingly oppressive responses from the Israeli authorities. Read the rest of this entry »

As Palestinian human rights organizations dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), the Palestinian Council of Human Rights Organizations would like to raise its concern about a series of collective and punitive measures taken by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) against Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons in recent months, prompting the latter to launch a campaign of disobedience, including a hunger strike, on 27 September 2011.

Ramallah, 2 October 2011

On 27 September 2011, Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons announced the start of a campaign of disobedience to protest an escalating series of punitive measures taken against them by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) in recent months. The campaign is composed of several elements, including a hunger strike and refusal to cooperate with a number of IPS rules, such as wearing prison uniforms and participating in multiple daily roll calls.
